Creative Review – NME’s facelift
Weekly music magazine NME has been given a makeover by art director Mark Neil. We asked Neil about the reasons for the redesign – and its strong resemblance to iconic style mag The Face.
Indeed it has.
I’ve not read NME for ages, and this interesting breakdown of its recent redesign prompted me to take a look at the latest issue on the newsstand. Unfortunately, what struck me more than the new design was how light and ‘empty’ the issue felt. And at £2.40 for a weekly mag, I certainly didn’t feel like it was something worth picking up on a whim.
Its new dimensions – a vast improvement at A4 – along with the usual newsprint paper stock both make it feel rather like Private Eye, which is a much more palatable £1.50 a fortnight. I’m not sure why NME is weekly actually – something to do with staying at the bleeding edge with current reviews, I expect. To me, it would suit fortnightly much more.
One of the most telling remarks about the redesign? NME’s art director says of the new A4 format: “It works well on iPad format, too, which is no bad thing.”
