Christmas 1922

What is the weather like with you? It’s so soft and spring-like here that actually pink roses are out. So are the Christmas roses under the espalier pear-trees. I love Christmas; I shall always feel it is a holy time. I wonder if dear old Hardy will write a poem this year.

Sadly, this was KM’s last Christmas. Her tuberculosis caught up with her and she died only a few weeks later at the Institute, suffering a fatal haemorrhage on 9 January, 1923. She was 34 years old. Although Murry was absent for Christmas, he had rejoined her by that stage.

Katherine Mansfield is buried in the cemetery at Avon, near Fontainebleau.
