Truck?

without comments

How was Truck Festival then paulie?!

Well it was… alright. Going to Truck again after two years, my expectations were already high, but having been to Camp only a few months ago (it feels like decades ago, sadface), nothing will ever come close to that experience.

So on a relative scale, Truck was pretty good. There weren’t enough bands that I was excited about, and the company two years ago was awesome – this year there were less people going who I knew, but still a decent group.

The acts I did see were mostly excellent – highlights include Youthmovies’ tight-ass set, and being enchanted by Laura Marling in a small tent. I also really enjoyed Okkervil River, Emmy the Great and (inexplicably) Frank Turner’s set was entertaining and endearing.

But there just weren’t many random, unlikely, “holy shit this is awesome!” moments. Sure there was the crazy rave inside a cross between a golf ball, a box of tinfoil and the Crystal Maze. And the game of volleyball inside a packed tent waiting for Laura Marling very quickly became fevered and hilarious. And the catering being done by friendly folks from the local Rotary Club is sweet and a rare thing. But the rest if it was just as expected. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s nice to have moments where you sit back and just think “God, I’m so lucky to be here.”

Truck just didn’t have that for me this time around.

But that’s ok. It is what it is, and I had a nice time. I also got brutally sunburnt, but so did a thousand of us because that’s what happens when the sun comes out in the UK.

And, like some bastard ex-lover who shouldn’t have gotten over his darling so soon, I’m already foaming at the mouth for Offset Festival at the end of August. The line-up beats Truck’s, and the thrill of the new is there for me. Plus I already know of a good little group of folks who will be in attendance so it is shaping up very rapidly to be a Truck killer.

But a Camp killer? Hell, I don’t even think another Camp could do that…
